The Institute of Textile Architecture is a scientific centre whose scope of activities includes processing and technologies as well as the application and promotion of textile products. The Institute was established in 1957 as the Central Laboratory of Cotton Industry; from 1978 to 1996 it has been operating under the name of the Research and Development Centre of Cotton Industry. The Institute’s staff consists of 77 persons, among them 41 scientific workers.

The Institute of Textile Architecture comprises:

- Department of Design and Technologies of Textiles,

- Department of Chemical Technology and Textile Care,

- Accredited Laboratory of Textile Tests (Accreditation No. L 56/3/99 of Poland’s Bureau of Tests and Certification),

- Department of Information, Marketing and Sale,

- Experimental Plant for Spinning, Weaving and Demonstration of Ready-made Clothing.

The Institute specialises in:

- creative designing and development of novel structures, end-use properties, and external forms of textiles,

- new technological processes for cotton and blends of cotton with chemical fibres,

- application of textiles for technical and special products,

- modern methods of textile raw materials and products assessment, and quality assurance systems according to the ISO and PN standards,

- fancy yarns,

- unique finishes of textile products.

The Institute supplies services in:

- determination and evaluation of cotton properties using the 900 HVI line, the AFIS system and MDTA 3,

- testing the properties of textile fibres, yarns, and fabrics according to PN and ISO standard procedures,

- testing the fibre composition of textile products using new techniques such as computer image analysis,

- consultancy and expertise in the processing of cellulose fibres and their blends with synthetic fibres, “from fibre to finished product”,

- maintaining a textile industry data base and archives of printing patterns,

- production of unique novelty yarns, stretch fabrics, goffer woven fabrics, and apparel fabrics,

- application of CAD/CAM systems for fabric designing.

The Institute co-operates with foreign research institutions such as: Faserinstitut Bremen /Germany/, Technical University of Ghent /Belgium/, Centro Tecnologico Das Industrias Textile Do Vestaurio /Portugal/, Ivanovo State Textile Academy /Russia/, Technical University of Liberec /Czech Republic/, National Research Centre /Cairo, Egypt/, Kaunas University of Technology /Lithuania/, School of Textiles, Fiber & Polymer Science /South Carolina, USA/, CIRAD /Montpellier, France/, Cotton Division Fiber Technology Branch /Memphis, USA/, Forschungsinstitute für Reinigungstechnologie /Krefeld, Germany/.

The Institute publishes the magazine ”ARCHITEKTURA TEKSTYLIÓW” (TEXTILE ARCHITECTURE), the first magazine in Poland for textile technologists, manufactures, tailors, and wholesalers, which informs its readers about new international fashion trends and provides practical information about new textile constructions.
